In a vibrant celebration of culture, courage, and community, Atafa o le Moana officially launched its inaugural youth cohort last Friday night — marking the beginning of a powerful journey for 20 young Pacific leaders committed to systems change, cultural revival, and intergenerational transformation.
The evening began with a traditional Niuean welcome, followed by an opening prayer delivered by Togia Falakoa, grounding the event in faith and connection. Master of Ceremonies Pelenatino Malo carried the night with humour and heart, ushering in an atmosphere of joy and collective pride.
Co-founders Ruta Tonumaivao and Kayla Schwalger then took the stage to share the vision behind Tapasā and Atafa o le Moana, describing the initiative as “a dream come to life.” Their words affirmed the movement’s purpose: to cultivate future Pacific leaders through cultural grounding, mentorship, and bold leadership in complex systems.
Strategic Lead Ella Falakoa followed with an inspiring address before handing the spotlight to the heart of the evening — the Youth Navigators. Leads Grace Senio, Danny Silivelio, and Zion Kingi each spoke with passion about the journey ahead, before inviting each of the 20 Atafa youth to the front to share their personal mission: from mental health and education equity to climate justice and cultural identity.
“It was deeply moving to hear from every single youth about the issues they care about and the dreams they carry — each one representing a different walk of life, but united in their purpose,” said co-founder and Executive Director Ruta Tonumaivao.
Support mentors Sisifa Lui and Nichole Loloselo were also acknowledged for their ongoing role in guiding the youth throughout the programme.
The night concluded with a shared dinner and joyful talanoa, setting the tone for what will be a transformative journey. The first Atafa event will take place next Friday, officially beginning the vaka voyage of these future navigators.
More than a programme, Atafa o le Moana is a declaration — that our youth are ready, our cultures are powerful, and our futures will be shaped by hands that carry both ancestral wisdom and modern courage. This is what it looks like when community backs its next generation to lead.
